Mean, Mode, Median and Range Poem (or Rap)

For those of you are teaching about mean, mode, median, and range, here is a poem that might help the students to remember better.

The mean is the average,
Don't you hear me say?
Add 'em all up
And divide away!

The mode is the most
You're going to see!
Gram 'em all up
For you and me!

The median is in the middle
Of the numbers in a row.
It's always in the middle
Of the crowd, you know!

Now I'm going to tell you
About the range.
Listen up
'Cause it's a little strange!
You find the high (clap up high),
You find the low (clap down low),
Sbutract the two (clap, clap),
And there you go! (cheer)

Third Grade Social Study Websites

Third Grade Websites for Social Studies

The first one has many lessons for all grade levels that meet the Texas TEKS.

Bee Website

One of the teachers at Hickory Creek, Amanda Elred, told me about a great website. It is all about bees. There are grade level lessons for K-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-12. This would be a great time of year to do a study on bees. This would fit into our scope and sequence also.

Texas History

Yesterday I got to observe a fourth grade class who was researching information about the Texas Revolution. Texas History is so interesting and so much fun to teach. It reminded me of some websites that I have used in the past. There are some great research and great lesson plans at the following websites. If you have already passed this study, make sure to download these lessons for next year.

http://www.lsjunction.com/ - this website has information of all the people who played a role in the Texas Revolution, including all the battles.

http://www.tshaonline.org/tools/lessonplans/plans/129.html - Who Am I? This can be used as an introdution or culminating activity about the annexation of Texas.

http://www.texaslre.org/downloads/lessons/032005_lp_intermediate.pdf - Reporting Live From the Texas Revolution - Students will learn about all the major battles of Texas.

http://www.texaslre.org/downloads/lessons/032005_lp_middleschool_1.pdf - Stepping Towards Independence. Students learn more about the greivances that the Texians had against Mexico. http://www.texaslre.org/downloads/lessons/032005_lp_middleschool_2.pdf (Score Cards needed for Stepping Towards Independence.) http://www.texaslre.org/downloads/lessons/032005_lp_middleschool_3.pdf (Boot Cards needed for Stepping Towards Independence.)

http://www.texaslre.org/downloads/lessons/032006_lp_intermediate.pdf - Grievances of the Texas Declaration of Independence - Students review the reasons why they wanted their independence.

http://texashistory.unt.edu/young/educators/trading/tradingcards/4trading.pdf - Texas History Trading Cards - pictures of historical Texas figures with information.

http://www.texaslre.org/downloads/lessons/032004_lp_intermediate.pdf - Texas Heroes Bingo - identify facts about Texas heroes through a Bingo game.

http://www.tshaonline.org/tools/lessonplans/plans/82.html - Paper Leaders. Students research and interpret information concerning information about Texas heroes. They then make a "life" size model of their Texas leader.

Hopefully, you will be able to use some these. I used the "Paper Leaders" for years as a culminating activity after we studied the Battle of San Jacinto. My students enjoyed this immensely. It takes a few days, but they truly enjoyed researching, making their paper leader, and then sharing what they had learned. I would hang them in the hallway so all could enjoy.

Teachers: In Social Studies if you are struggling to find fun, exciting, hands-on lessons, contact me and I will see what I can find to help you.
